Abstract
This article explores the role of eroticism in early theatrical photography, examining how 19th- and early 20th-century images of performers contributed to shifting perceptions of sensuality, celebrity, and visual culture. Through advancements in photographic technology, theatrical portraits captured the allure of actors and actresses, often emphasizing suggestive poses, elaborate costumes, and intimate gazes. These images navigated the fine line between artistic expression and commercial appeal, influencing audience desires and shaping public personas. By analyzing archival photographs, this study reveals how theatrical photography both reflected and constructed evolving attitudes toward eroticism, gender, and performance in modern visual culture.
