European Drama and Performance Studies, 2,  3, (2014), pp. 133

Abstract

This article examines the integration of photography into 19th-century theatrical journals, highlighting the tensions between traditional illustration and emerging photographic techniques. Chiarelli explores how advancements like similigravure transformed visual culture, allowing for the mass reproduction of photographic images alongside text. While some periodicals resisted this shift, others embraced photography’s documentary potential, shaping theatrical iconography. The study analyzes case studies of illustrated theatrical journals, revealing how photography influenced visual storytelling, performance critique, and celebrity culture. Ultimately, Chiarelli argues that this transition redefined the relationship between theater, media, and spectatorship in the modern era.
