Abstract

This article explores Julia Margaret Cameron’s photographic interpretations of Shakespeare, examining how her work engages with community, narrativity, and empowerment. Cameron’s staged tableaux vivants reimagine Shakespearean scenes through a distinctly personal and collaborative lens, challenging Victorian conventions of gender and artistic authorship. By casting family and friends in her compositions, she fosters a communal artistic practice that blends photography and theatrical storytelling. The study argues that Cameron’s Shakespearean images not only reinterpret canonical texts but also empower her subjects, particularly women, by positioning them as active participants in visual and literary culture, redefining authorship and representation in 19th-century photography.
