Abstract
From the 1920s to the 1960s Oliver Messel was a leading designer of theatre, film, ballet and opera as well as moving in the highest social circles. His friends in the 1920s and 30s included many of the Bright Young Things including Cecil Beaton and Rex Whistler while other acquaintances included film stars, ambassadors and members of the Royal Family. Poor health and changing theatrical tastes led to Messel’s retirement to Barbados, where he embarked on a new career as an architect and interior designer, becoming the driving force behind the architectural style of the nearby island of Mustique. In 2015, the University of Bristol Theatre Collection purchased the personal papers of Oliver Messel and have begun an ambitious cataloging project. Here Oliver’s nephew Thomas Messel and the archivist cataloging Oliver’s papers discuss some of the key themes from the collection.
