Re: Staging the Trauma / Clark, Laurie Beth

Abstract
This article examines how memorials worldwide stage the aftermath of historical trauma, engaging with presence, absence, and the wreckage left behind. Clark explores how sites of remembrance use techniques akin to theatrical, photographic, and medical “staging” to organize narratives of loss. These memorials structure trauma through storytelling, symbolic representation, and spatial design, drawing parallels with psychological frameworks such as Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief. By analyzing global sites—from Hiroshima to Robben Island—Clark highlights both common commemorative strategies and cultural variations in representing trauma, ultimately questioning how we navigate memory, loss, and the remains of catastrophic events.
