Abstract
The article provides information on the role of the magic lantern slide in entertainment and education system during 1860-1920. According to the author, it originated in Europe as part of the entertainment industry, but it came to maximize its greatest impact as an instructional device in public lectures and in formal education in the U.S. Meanwhile, the first transparencies for use in such lanterns were hand-painted glass disks mounted in wooden frames. Furthermore, the author traces the importance of the lantern slide on the temperance societies, on the public lectures, and on the formal education.
