Abstract
With a focus to further explore the world of dance photography, the research focuses on representing choreographed works through still photography and how to effectively portray movement concepts and themes through still images. Most importantly the connection developed and necessary between the choreographer and photographer is of utmost importance. Beginning with an overview of related sources, information is presented based upon the elements, tools, and concepts related to photographing dance. An in depth look into various past photography figures and also choreographer/photographer relationships serves as the base for further developing the study. Aside from gathering resources discussing varying dance photographers and their techniques, the research includes personal interviews with UCI’s Graduate Student choreographers. The purpose of the interviews is to gather as much information about the choreographic concepts to then set up photo shoots to capture images that best represent the works created based off of key elements such as the number of dancers, movement style, costuming, lighting, and location. The final stage is the framing and presentation of an image that must successfully represent the original concepts. Resulting information is presented as future guidelines to effectively present choreographed work through still photography. A prescriptive approach is taken to convey the information as a potential process for future dance photographers.
