Abstract
This project is an examination of the modes of representation in contemporary Spanish theatrical arts. I investigate the world view, technical and dramatic features and theoretical concerns regarding the different modes of representation in theater: theatrical, dramatic and photographic texts. My emphasis is on the mode of photography and the conceptualization of gender within the different modes of representation. I propose a photo-theatrical gaze as a way of looking at photographs of theatrical productions through a comparative lens, an optic that considers the many texts within which a theatrical photo is interweaved. I also explore mediating factors, such as the camera, the photo selection process, and social norms, involved in the modes of representation. This study is partially based on field research which was carried out in Spain in the winter of 1993. My research method over the past two years includes viewing plays, interviewing playwrights, actors, actresses, directors and photographers, collecting photographs and theater reviews, attending theater festivals and lectures on theater, photographing scenes from plays and billboards which advertise performances and investigating current theoretical concepts involved in the three branches which collate this project: theater, photography, and gender. To illustrate my points, I focus on a number of historical references for theater and on contemporary theatrical and dramatic texts and photographs, primarily from 1984-1994. I explore the work of contemporary playwrights, Sara Molina and Paloma Pedrero in the two final chapters. My selection of photographs is from a variety of sources: theater journals, such as El Publico, Primer Acto, Estreno; newspapers including El Mundo, El Pais and ABC; programs from the performances of the plays; photos compliments of the authors of the plays; and photos from my collection which I took in the winter of 1993.
