Abstract
The paper explores the complexities involved in the documentation of performance art, questioning the assumptions of authenticity and representation in the visual capture of live performances. It argues that traditional notions of documentation may fail to preserve the essence of the ‘live’ experience, advocating for a more conceptual approach that highlights the performativity of photographs and videos. Case studies, including Valie Export and Cindy Sherman, illustrate how documentation can serve as both an archive and a performative act itself, creating a bridge between the audience and the artwork.
