Ph.D., , Ann Arbor, United States 2010 Abstract I argue that the notion of “theatricality,” though it has been frequently used as an interpretive tool in critical discourse on various artistic and literary forms (novels, poetry, painting, fashion, film, etc.) remains ill defined. Moreover, it appears obvious that theatricality does not, in fact, manifest itself in the same way in all genres and media where critics attempt to use it as an interpretive tool. A double question thus informs my research: how legitimate is the use of…

Mediated Presence: Performance Art and Technology
Khalifeh, Soulaf, «Mediated Presence: Performance Art and Technology». , , Abstract The whole tendency of modern communication whether in the press, in advertising or in the high arts is towards participation in a process, rather than the apprehension of concepts. And this major revolution, intimately linked to technology, is one whose consequences have not begun to be studied although they have begun to be felt.” Recalling McLuhan’s words, this paper is an attempt to study the effects and consequences of technology and how it allowed performance artists greater flexibility in experimenting with space, time and representation, engaging in a social and institutional critique. The pertinent questions here are: how are…

‘CINEMATOGRAPHIC’: AN EXPLORATION INTO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TABLEAUX OF JEFF WALL AND GREGORY CREWDSON
Gerrie, Vanessa, «’CINEMATOGRAPHIC’: AN EXPLORATION INTO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC TABLEAUX OF JEFF WALL AND GREGORY CREWDSON». , , Abstract This dissertation will examine the ways in which two artists, Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson, use photography to create images that are cinematic not only aesthetically but technically. Their work allows us to identify a new kind of art photography. By placing their work within the context of the ÔPictures GenerationÕ of the 1970s we can see the evolution and the emergence of this photographic regime. The Pictures Generation of the 1970s and 1980s saw a shift in what was known as art photography. From the 1970s onwards artists such as Jeff…
