Abstract
This article reviews a symposium held at Tate Modern that explored the relationship between photography, performance, and affect. Key speakers, including Carol Mavor, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and Olivier Richon, examined photography’s performative nature, its role in shaping identity, and its power to challenge historical and social narratives. Discussions ranged from black American history and racial representation to conceptual still-life photography. The event highlighted photography’s ability to act as a performative space where images shape perception and provoke emotional engagement. The review critiques the symposium’s missed opportunities for deeper discussion but acknowledges its contributions to expanding photographic discourse.
